Keary Kautzer works with watercolor because of its unique properties, primarily the fast drying time which allows him to complete a painting very quickly, en plein air, preserving his first impression of the scene.
Keary prefers to work 'wet into wet' - mixing watercolor paint on wet paper - when the paint comes in contact with the wet paper, the paint reacts in a symphony of motion. He is attracted to scenes with reflections in water or contrasting values of light against dark. These areas become the focal points in his paintings, for example the reflection of a boat in a marina.
Keary won the Best of Show and 1st Place honors at the 2009 the Joan Kohn "Alive in the Arts" Juried Exhibition in Gallery 110 in Plymouth, WI.
At the 2009 Door County Plein Air Festival Keary's painting Journeyman won 1st Place during the Dockside Quick-Paint and he will be one of the forty Featured Artists invited to the Door County Plein Air Festival in 2010
Kautzer is a member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society and associate member of the American Watercolor Society, and is represented by Two Fish Gallery in Elkhart Lake, WI.
